The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the fragile ecosystem of Nepal’s Everest region. Founded in 1991 through the vision of the late Tengboche Rinpoche, with support from MoCTCA and WWF Nepal, SPCC leads sustainable waste management in the region. We also monitor illegal climbing and maintain the Khumbu Icefall Route on Mt. Everest. As climate change threatens the Himalayas, SPCC is expanding its role through Project RISE—an initiative advancing research, innovation, and resilience in high-altitude communities. Working with local communities, government agencies, and global partners, we remain committed to the long-term sustainability of Everest.
Mission

To advance environmental sustainability in the Everest region by leading innovative waste management solutions, promoting climate-resilient practices, and fostering community well-being through education, empowerment, and collaboration.

Vision

To foster a resilient Everest region where environmental sustainability, community well-being, and climate action are central to development—ensuring the preservation of the Himalayas for future generations.

Our Works

SPCC leads a wide range of initiatives to protect the Everest region’s environment and support its communities. Our work includes waste collection, segregation, recycling, cleanup campaigns, and infrastructure development across trekking routes and settlements. We also setup the Khumbu Icefall Route on Mt. Everest, ensuring climber safety through the installation of ladders and ropes. Beyond waste management, we conduct training and capacity-building programs for local communities, install community-based early warning systems to enhance climate resilience, and engage in collaborative research to address the growing impacts of climate change. Through these efforts, SPCC works to promote sustainability, safety, and long-term environmental stewardship in the Himalayas.
